Effects of non-circular tokamak geometry on ion-temperature-gradient driven modes

چکیده
The influence of plasma elongation and Shafranov shift on the stability of electrostatic ion-temperature-gradient driven modes (ηi-modes) is investigated. An advanced fluid model is used for the ions together with Boltzmann distributed electrons. The derived eigenvalue equation is solved both analytically, in the strong ballooning limit, and numerically. It is found that the effects of elongation change from stabilizing, for peaked density profiles, to destabilizing in the flat density regime. In addition, it is shown that the maximum growth rate is shifted towards shorter wavelengths as the elongation increases. The effects of shaping on tokamak stability are exemplified with data from a Joint European Torus (JET) high-performance mode discharge.

Global Gyrokinetic Simulation of Tokamak Transport
A kinetic simulation code based on the gyrokinetic ion dynamics in global general metric (including a tokamak with circular or noncircular cross–section) has been developed. This gyrokinetic simulation is capable of examining the global and semi–global driftwave structures and their associated transport in a tokamak plasma. We investigate the property of the ion temperature gradient (ITG) or ηi...
متن کاملShort wavelength temperature gradient driven modes in tokamak plasmas.
New unstable temperature gradient driven modes in an inhomogeneous tokamak plasma are identified. These modes represent temperature gradient (ion and electron) driven modes destabilized in the short wavelength regions with k( perpendicular )rho(i,e)>>1, respectively. The instability occurs due to a specific plasma response that significantly deviates from Boltzmann distribution in the regions k...
متن کاملA circular equilibrium model for local gyrokinetic simulations of ion temperature gradient fluctuations in reversed field pinches
A simple large-aspect-ratio (R0=r) circular equilibrium model is developed for low-beta reversed field pinch (RFP) geometry. The model is suitable for treating small scale instability and turbulent transport driven by ion temperature gradient (ITG) and related electron drift modes in gyrokinetic simulations. The equilibrium model is an RFP generalization of the common tokamak s-a model to small...
متن کاملKinetic temperature gradient driven modes in inhomogeneous plasmas
New unstable temperature gradient driven modes in an inhomogeneous plasma are identified. These modes represent transient ω ≃ k‖v (e,i) th sound oscillations in magnetized plasma that are kinetically destabilized via Landau interactions. Electron and ion sound branches are unstable for large values of the Larmor radius parameter k⊥ρe,i ≫ 1, respectively. The instability occurs due to a specific...

Full cross section calculations of ion-temperature-gradient-driven turbulence with Landau closure are being carried out as part of the Numerical Tokamak Turbulence Project, one of the U. S. Department of Energy’s Phase II Grand Challenges. To include the full cross section of a magnetic fusion device like the tokamak requires more memory and CPU time than is available on the National Energy Res...
